Wilton Sports Roundup: March 15

Your daily interactive digest for all Wilton scores, schedules and standings -- and a place to add information and images for all youth sports

The Wilton Basketball Association travel basketball teams earned top level seeds in the recent Fairfield County Basketball League tournaments. The FCBL is a 250 team league, including  travel teams from every town within Fairfield County, and about two dozen teams from beyond the county’s borders (see FCBLhoops.org).

After three month of regular season play that starts in December, the FCBL splits each boys and girls grade into tournament pools of peer groups. Three WBA teams received bids into the league’s highest level tournament pools for their grade.

The seventh grade girls team received the No. 2 seed (out of 24 teams), and got knocked out in the semi-finals by Bethel. The sixth grade boys team received the No. 5 seed (out of 42 teams), losing to Mt Vernon of Westchester County in the quarterfinals. The fifth grade boys team earned the No. 6 seed (out of 36 teams), losing to Trumbull in the semfinals.

For the entire WBA teams’ FCBL tournament grids, see the Photos section.

The next event in the Connecticut Challenge Speaker Series features a talk by Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor, mountain climber, and author of Keep Climbing: How I Beat Cancer and Reached the Top of the World.

Swarner shares his inspirational life story Thursday, April 12 at Roger Ludlowe Middle School at 7:30 PM. The event is free to the public and made possible in part with support from People’s United Bank.  Registration is required at www.CTChallenge.org/keepclimbing.

Swarner, who was named the 2007 Jimmy V Foundation’s Don’t Ever Give Up Award winner for his courage, will take you on his life’s journey through a dynamic audiovisual presentation, that is not only inspiring, but offers a message of hope that taps into that motivational adrenaline rush that runs through all of us. The presentation will include his climb up the 29,035-foot giant that is Mount Everest, surviving hurricane-force winds and crossing crevasses thousands of feet deep on rickety aluminum ladders. Swarner will offer insight into the grueling journey of his youth and his fight for survival in overcoming two bouts with cancer. Finally, you will trek with Sean to the highest peaks in Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Prior to the event, a special reception and flag signing for cancer survivors will be held at 6:30 pm.  Swarner will carry the flag up Mt. Kilimanjaro this July and plant it at the summit.  Following the event, Swarner will sign copies of his book, Keep Climbing.  A limited quantity will be available for purchase or you may bring your own copy for him to sign.

Additional support for this program provided by BMW of Bridgeport and Aetna.

Bill I have some possible good news for you. After reading this, I stopped by the Village Market onRead More my way home from a slow, rainy day in the Center in hopes of picking up some kumquats for Filbert. They are out. So it sounds like some of our fellow Wiltonians are laying kumquats around town. I just hope the rain has not scared Filbert. Best to you and your family. I shall pray for you in Church this weekend.

You miss the DAZE of George W?, failing banks, auto industry going under, record high homeRead More forclosures and unemployment, etc etc. Obama is getting it right! BOSTON (Reuters) - The average 401(k) retirement balance for U.S. workers hit a record high of $80,900 in the first quarter, a growth spurt of 75 percent since the stock market's nadir in March 2009, Fidelity Investments said on Thursday based on a survey of its accounts. Most of the recovery is linked to a stock market rally that has lifted the broad S&P 500 Index 145 percent since the close of trading on March 9, 2009. The 401(k) recovery looks even better for workers 55 and older, according to Boston-based Fidelity, the largest U.S. administrator of 401(k) retirement plans. Those pre-retirement workers have seen their average balance nearly double to $255,000 since the first quarter of 2009 when the average balance was $130,700. The analysis covers people who have been with their current employer 10 or more years, Fidelity said.

British soldier was hacked to death with a machete. The soldier is not allowed to have a gun but theRead More terrorists had a firearm but chose to behead the soldier. The suspects spoke to camera after attack. “We swear by Almighty Allah, we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone. The only reasons we killed this man is because Muslims are dying daily. This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. We apologize that woman had to see this today, but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don’t care about you.”

Israel knows who their enemy is and are not afraid to call them out. After 4 Americans were killedRead More by terrorists in Benghazi, when violence in the Middle East was raging, President Obama in partnership with Hillary Clinton spent $70,000 in taxpayer money on a commercial that aired on Pakistani television apologizing for the "video." We are sorry. We are going to get the man who made the video who exercised freedom of speech and arrest him. Any terrorist suspects questioned yet?
