God's Vision

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

all else be nought to me, save that thou art –

thou my best thought, by day or by night,

I broke my glasses a few weeks ago.  It happened at a most inopportune time as I was juggling how to be at two places at the same time - our Diocesan Convention which was held in Stamford and the Stop Hunger Now project at WEPCO (which successfully made 115,334 meals by ten Wilton faith communities in one day!)  I found a few minutes to rush to the optometrist, only to be told that the glasses could not be fixed immediately and I would have to wait for a part to come in.  Then I was asked if my prescription was the same?  So to be on the safe side I scheduled an appointment for several days later and yes, indeed, my prescription had changed and I might as well get new glasses than fix the old pair.  I was told that the new pair would arrive in a week or more.

So, for the past two weeks, I have been wearing my contact lenses daily, augmented by reading glasses.  It was no big deal during the day but by evening, my eyes felt strained and tired and I had to use my broken glasses taped together.  Since they have progressive lenses, my vision was often amiss as the frames sat lopsided on my face.  Needless to say, I was frustrated and annoyed at this inconvenience.  I hate not being able to see clearly!   Like everyone else, I want perfect vision at all times.

Of course, God would also like us to have perfect vision as well.  However, he desires that our vision be not just corrected by glasses or contact lenses but by our willingness to see with his eyes.  How well do we see the needs of those around us?   Do we have a vision of God’s constant presence in our lives?  Are our eyes consumed with the beauty of this world that God has given us?  The possibilities are endless as we yearn to make God’s vision our vision.

Today, I got my new glasses and my vision is sharp and clear.  No longer, am I struggling to see what is before me.  If only, it was as easy to just get a new set of “sacred” glasses to see like God!   Yet, together we can all try to have God’s vision for this world as we strive to bring peace, hope and justice to all.
