Wilton Mom Susan Schaller Book Event and Slideshow 12/10/12 6-7pm Wilton Library

Book event/slideshow by Susan Schaller (writes as Susan E.B. Schwartz) JFK's Secret Doctor: thrilling true life story of a pioneering rock climber and doctor specializing in back pain and fitness.

Wilton mom, Susan Schaller (who has been writing under the byline Susan E.B. Schwartz since 1991) is giving a book event and slideshow for her recently published book, JFK's Secret Doctor (Skyhorse Publishing) at the Wilton Library on Monday, 12/10/12, 6-7pm.

The book tells the thrilling true life story of Dr. Hans Kraus, who was one of the great American rock climbing pioneers, with exciting and daredevil first ascents in which Schaller drew on her own background as a rock and ice climber and member of the Literary Committee of the American Alpine Club.

But Kraus also had a second life as one of the great pioneering doctors of the century -- the first to discover, in the 1950s, that Americans weren't getting enough exercise, the first to predict the ominous long term effect if that didn't change, the first to identify pioneering treatments of back pain, and ultimately, to become Kennedy's secret White House doctor.

The fulll story of JFK's medical issues had never been told before, and Schaller was the first to have access to two Kennedy White House doctors and their medical records now archived in the Kennedy Library in Boston.  The book was the product of ten years of work, and then five years to find a literary agent and a publisher.

The free event will be accompanied by light refreshments.  Registration at the library is encouraged.
