Has Wilton Patch really died?

Is it time to say Rest in Peace to Wilton Patch?

Based on the recent lack of comments on Wilton Patch, I have to wonder if Wilton's Patch site is on its deathbed?

Anyone reading this is likely aware of the challenges AOL has had since acquiring the hyper-local Patch.com business. We have seen multiple rounds of layoffs, the shuttering of hundreds of smaller communities' Patch sites and the local dismissal of a majority of Patch editors.

But it the true measure of any hyper-local site's readership and following remains reader comments to stories and blog posts. It can be argued that if readers are not commenting, they are certainly not engaged by the content, and possibly not reading the content. Or, the content being posted here is not worthy of reader comments.

As of this writing, the last reader comment below was offered up on 15April to a post I submitted on 07April. As far as I can tell, there has not been another comment to a story or blog originating on Wilton Patch since the 15th. Sure, Wilton readers may be commenting on stories or blog posts that appear here but it those comments are not shown on bottom, that means the material was originally posted on another Patch site and mirrored here.

I noted today a story here about Westchester County high schools ranking in the top schools in the country - really? Is Wilton so bereft of original, hyper-local information that stories from WC are making their way to this page?

Hyper-local has become a crowded market and the terminal condition of the Patch is the latest victim to that crowding out phenomena.

RIP Wilton Patch?
