Shaban, Boucher Hold Town Hall Meeting in Weston

On Wednesday State Rep. John Shaban (R-135) and State Sen. Toni Boucher (R-26) hosted a productive town hall meeting at the Weston Public Library with a group of Weston residents.

Discussed were the major issues that shaped the 2013 legislative session, such as the state’s continuing fiscal problems, the misuse of transportation funding, our progress on education reform, and the stagnant condition of the state’s economy.

“Every year we pass legislation that impacts Weston families and businesses” Rep. Shaban said. “This meeting was a great opportunity to speak directly with residents and business owners.  I want to thank the attendees who made the time to provide insight and ask questions.”

Senator Boucher noted the negative financial Connecticut has put itself in has led to a minus GDP growth and leads to higher borrowing costs as noted by the recent downgrade by The Fitch Rating Agency on State of Connecticut General Obligation bonds to “negative.”

“The Fitch report quite properly notes that Connecticut has tied its own hands at a time of lingering uncertainty. It notes that we balanced the budget with gimmicks, our debt is growing and that one-party rule has failed to rebuild the state’s financial cushion. That’s the cold, hard truth. We’re dead last in economic growth. We’re the only state in the nation where the combined total of goods, services and salaries paid shrunk. That is a failure, that is our reality, and that is the result of the different road that the governor has taken us down. Instead of continually deflecting criticism and blaming the past, it is time to accept responsibility and change course,” Sen. Boucher told town hall participants.
