Food for Thought

The following is a press release from Marina Heau Stuart, acting on behalf of the Community Service Project Committee for the Wilton High School's class of 2013.

Only ten miles separate and the Norwalk Emergency Shelter/Food Pantry.  But the distance between living conditions for the residents there and Wilton residents here is almost hard to believe.

When members of Wilton's Class of 2013 found out about the need, they knew they wanted to help.  For two years now, students have visited the shelter, organized food and cosmetics drives, and last winter, a blanket and sleeping bag drive which collected well over 100 blankets from other students in the community.

The shelter, which sleeps 95, has been filled to capacity since the summer of 2008.  There has been a 100 percent increase in the number of people being served by the food pantry and soup kitchen, which serves the hungry three meals a day, 365 days a year.

"We couldn't believe there was such a great need," said a student volunteer.

"Blankets and sleeping bags were handed out to those who would otherwise be cold in one of the worst winter's  we've ever had.  We were fortunate to be able to help," said the student.

The winter is behind us but the problem of hunger is always present. The students have organized a food drive for this spring.  "Food For Thought" will take place  from Monday, May 23rd - Friday, June 3rd.  Drop off for the community is at Trackside Teen Center, located at 15 Station Rd.

So when you find yourself in the grocery store over the next two weeks, please pick up a few extra items for the hungry among us, drop them off at Trackside, and remember the students of Wilton High School Class of 2013 that are helping our neighbors.
