Young WVAC Member Wins Big

Patrick York, a new member of Wilton's Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and his group garner a third place finish in a national competition.

One of Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps' newest members, Patrick York, was part of 1,000 Police Explorers who attended the National Law Enforcement Explorers Conference this summer in Atlanta, Georgia.  Officer Richard Ross and Officer Steven Rangel, the advisors for the Wilton Police Explorer Post, also attended.  The Wilton Police Explorer Post was divided into three teams for the competition.  Ryan Lewis and Michael Potter were teamed up with Patrick.

The teams were assigned categories just prior to the start of the competition and Wilton's category was emergency field first aid.  The scenario presented to the young Wilton team was that an individual had been a victim of a violent assault and later became unresponsive and was not breathing.  An ATF agent, who was also a paramedic, judged the competition.  Since the groups were acting in the role of police officers, important components were teamwork and performing the appropriate patient care until the EMS units arrived.

The Wilton team won third place out of all the teams that competed. This is the first award the Wilton Police Explorers have won as a team in quite some time.  Earlier in the year Jeff Rees (Norwalk EMS) taught a CPR and first aid class to the Wilton Explorers. The team feels this class truly helped prepare them for this competition.
