Menorah Lighting, Environmental Documentary, Kids' Library Programs

On Monday, December 2 at 5:30 p.m a giant outdoor Menorah Lighting will take place at the Wilton Town Green. The event will include live music, hot latkes, Chanukah gelt, dreidels, and is perfect for the whole family. Free and open to all. Led by Rabbi Levi Stone of the Schneerson Center. Wilton Go Green gives us the heads-up about a special screening of Gasland Part II, with Q&A on Dec. 3 at 6:30- 9:30p.m. at the Nature Discovery Center, 10 Woodside Lane in Westport. This documentary is about the personal and environmental dangers and implications of fracking or hydraulic fracturing, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil.

This screening, the third in a series of environmental films at Earthplace, will be followed by a Q&A with David Brown and Jonathan Steinberg, local experts and activists on the topic of fracking. 

Dr. Brown is currently a Public Health Toxicologist and Director of Public Health Toxicology for Environment and Human Health Inc., and organization dedicated to protecting human health from environmental harms through research, education and the promotion of sound public policy. He is also a professor at Fairfield University teaching “Ethics in the Environment.” 

Jonathan Steinberg is a State Representative for Westport, Vice Chair of the Environment and Technology Committee and a strong proponent of environmental sustainability. He introduced a fracking waste ban bill to the Connecticut legislature in 2012 and hopes to introduce several more related bills in the upcoming legislative session.

Thursday, December 5. For families dealing with addiction, How to Cope provides support for family members impacted by addiction. There is a small and confidential "How to Cope" session on Thursday, December 5 at 6:00p.m. in Danbury and Monday, December 9 at 5:30p.m. in Ridgefield

Tuesday, Dec. 10 Breaking Code: Create What’s Behind Angry Birds and Other Fun Apps – A One-Hour Entertaining Lesson in Coding, 1 – 6:30 p.m.  Wilton Library is joining Computer Science Education Week, a national movement to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).  One-hour “lessons” in coding will be given throughout the afternoon for adults and children 6 years and up at the following intervals:1 – 2 p.m., 2:30 – 3:30 p.m., 4 – 5 p.m. and 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Participants can bring their own devices and sit in on any of the sessions.  A short introduction to the online class will be given at the start of each hour. Attendees can participate at their own speed on their own devices, or use one of the computers set up by the library expressly for this purpose.  Registration is required so that the library knows how many computers are needed each hour.  Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 9 – 15, 2013is sponsored by Computing in the Core, a non-partisan advocacy coalition and Code.org, a non-profit dedicated to growing computer programming education.  Join us for an hour of fun as we peek behind the coding curtain together! In this hour long session, kids share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the exciting new craft of Rainbow Loom! Bring your own loom and make a bracelet. Whatever level of looming you are on, you can share what you know, or learn from a teammate.  Kids teach kids in a fun, freeform, instructional program. Some rubber bands will be provided but supplies are limited. Grades 1 and up. No registration required. Caregivers should stay in the building.  Sponsored by the Coyle Family Young Readers Fund.
