Come See Wilton Dancers Shine in Annual Spring Shows this Sunday

Dance magic will delight the community as Wilton Dance Studio’s Spring Shows bring students’ hard work to the Wilton High School stage, including 96 dancers from WILTON. Three performances feature more than 250 student dancers on Sunday, June 2, 2013. Younger dancers perform in ‘Grandma’s Attic” at 11 a.m. The classic comic ballet “Coppélia” is featured during the 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. shows. The two afternoon performances also showcase “All that Jazz,” a review-style show including modern, tap, hip-hop and other styles of dance, reflecting the diversity of dance study provided by the studio.

14 dancers from WILTON will receive recognition for their participation over five, ten and 15 years with the studio.  The Spring Show tradition gives student dancers a chance to share their love of dance in different ways. Dancers up to age six participate in “Grandma’s Attic,” which allows each class to shine in its own routine and costume, but without requiring dancers (or the audience) to stay for an extended period of time. “We love providing a performance experience to our younger dancers that allows them to experience the big stage without too much pressure, It’s important to their development of confidence and also joy in sharing their art.” said Brenda Froehlich, Wilton native, owner and artistic director of the studio.   For older dancers, the show begins with bringing to life a story-focused ballet. This allows students to develop their understanding of what it’s like to be part of a true ballet company and tell a story through movement and expression. This year, ballet students from age seven through high school seniors will present “Coppélia.” This fun and fanciful story tell of an inventor, Dr. Coppélius, who creates a life-like doll so lovey that the local heartthrob, Franz, decides to dump his fiancé Swanhilda.  Mayhem and dancing ensue, but of course all is well in the end. This show features beautiful costumes and professional sets from J. Galt Designs, a local theatrical backdrop company.   The afternoon show second act, called “All That Jazz,” gives the stage to dancers who take part in the studio’s contemporary, tap, and hip-hop classes. The format is a variety show, with each class presenting a number. Older students create their own choreography and work with their dance friends for many weeks prior to the show to rehearse their moves to perfection. “We love to see our students take part in developing their own performances and extending their dance education with choreography. Their creativity makes our spring shows unique,” said Mrs. Froehlich.   The Wilton Dance Studio’s spring performances will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. (Grandma’s Attic) and 1 and 4:30 p.m. (Coppélia and All that Jazz) at Wilton High School’s Clune Performing Arts Center.
