Pre-Halloween Tour Of Wilton's Oldest Cemetery

Tour Wilton's oldest cemetery and meet the pioneers who will be "brought to life" by reenactors.

Just in time for Halloween, there will be a tour of Wilton’s oldest burial ground, the Sharp Hill Cemetery, on Sunday, October 28, at 2 p.m. organized by the Wilton Historical Society.  The tour is open to families, the public and is free!

Six of the pioneers who are buried there will be "brought to life" for the afternoon by reenactors who will describe their roles in Wilton’s history. The men and women who are buried in Sharp Hill Cemetery include Wilton’s founders and 23 veterans of the American Revolutionary War.

There are about 150 legible gravestones, including 70 from the 18th century, plus another 150 stones no longer legible or graves marked only with common fieldstones.

The Sharp Hill Cemetery dates from 1738, when John Marvin gave 64 square rods (4/10 of an acre) to the Presbyterian or Congregational Society of Wilton as the site of a meetinghouse for the worship of God. Following the cemetery tour, at 4:00, hot apple cider and cookies will be offered at the Historical Society.
