Despite a strong season, the WHS Boys Hockey team gets ousted by a tough New Canaan squad.
The seventh-seeded Wilton Warriors fell to the second-ranked New Canaan Rams Saturday night, getting bounced from the FCIAC regional tournament in a 5-0 defeat. Wilton junior netminder Kevin O'Connell faced 41 shots, while New Canaan only allowed six as back-up freshman goalie Chris Koennecke picked up the shutout."We wanted to come out strong and play hard in front of Chris tonight," said New Canaan sophomore Dylan Hart. "It was a real credit to him and our defense that we were able to block a lot of shots."The Rams opened up the scoring in the first period when senior Henry Richardson scored off a Warrior giveaway to give his team a 1-0 lead. The second goal came just over two minutes into the second period when Hart skated into the slot…

Jump roping is becoming an evermore popular nationwide sport, and the Moon Jumpers' performance last week just added to the evidence.
There's a saying, and a movie, that allude to white men's inability to jump. The saying includes nothing about kids between ages seven and fourteen, and rightly so. Last week, the Wilton Library hosted a showing of the documentary film Jump!, a well-made look into the burgeoning popularity of jump roping as a national sport and subculture. But what helped the film really hit home was what preceded it. The Moon Jumpers, a jump roping team from Newtown, Conn., showed how the sport is catching on with kids at a young age in Wilton's own backyard, delighting a whooping and applause-filled crowd with a variety of spins, rhythm and snappy moves. As the story goes, Pamela Patterson and her daughter Kristina were living in Rhode Island about five …

The News-Times reports a large acquisition involving a Wilton resident.
Lower Fairfield County is already home to some outstanding lacrosse programs. Now, it may well be the home of one of the largest online equipment retailers for the sport. The News-Times is reporting that Wilton resident John Arrix has parternered with New Jersey financier George West to buy Lax.com, an ecommerce Web site that sells lacrosse equipment to the tune of around $4 million annually, or 40 percent of the $100 million industry's $10 million online market. Arrix said he has plans to move the business from its New Jersey location to somewhere in Fairfield County when the building's lease expires. Read the full story: Wilton Resident Nets Lax.com.

The state considers legislation that would guard against student-athletes returning to play too soon after head injuries.
Maybe getting benched isn't so bad after all; riding pine may save your mind. The Connecticut General Assembly is considering tougher restrictions on students returning to play after head injuries. Connecticut is one of 12 states that may pass such legislation. If young student athletes return to the field or rink too soon after a concussion they are at risk for potential brain damage. And although experts agree it's common sense to wait, pressure from coaches, parents, and often the students themselves sometimes impedes that. "A kid will fall and get hurt and the coach will ask them how they feel and they'll say 'fine,''' said Christy Hayes, Director of Athletics at Wilton High School. "Very few will say they're hurt, that they have a …

The WHS girls hockey team takes an early lead but falls to New Canaan 5-2.
In the first period of Thursday night's game, Wilton looked strong against a New Canaan team that had played back-to-back nights. The Rams came out a little sluggish and the Warriors capitalized on it early. But Wilton seemed to lose focus and the Rams came roaring back behind an Olivia Hompe hat trick to win 5-2 and improve to 14-1 on the season. Wilton fell to 5-8-1 with the loss. "We stunk in the first period," said New Canaan head coach Rich Bulan, adding that playing two games in two nights might have worn the squad down a bit. "We definitely started out slow. We took 60-something shots yesterday, so I don't know if we tired ourselves out or what." The scoring started almost right away in this contest, with Wilton scoring just 43 …

Parks and Rec officials suggest a few changes to a proposed ban of dogs from Wilton's playing fields.
When discussions began about restricting pet access to playing fields, town and Parks and Recreation officials were talking about banning dogs from all athletic complexes. That plan has since been reigned in. Parks and Rec representatives presented a revised set of suggestions to the Board of Selectmen on Monday night, having changed their perspective slightly after talking with other area towns that have wrestled with the same issue. "We've clarified our thinking on it even further," said Parks and Rec Commission Chairwoman Christine Finkelstein. "What we're looking for now is a complete prohibition of dogs on the Wilton High School athletic complex." That sounds severe but Finkelstein pointed out that the majority of the town's pet …

Q&A event draws a big crowd and a wide range of resident questions.
The meeting room at Trackside Teen Center was crowded with over 100 citizens eager to ask questions of the dozen or so town officials gathered for the Speak Up! Wilton forum on Saturday morning. The event's program asked attendees not to make speeches or personal remarks and, for the most part, people avoided doing so. Questions ran the gamut from sports to tax cuts for the elderly to union negotiations and beyond. One citizen began with a compliment: "Our long nightmare is over with Route 7 and I want to give a tip of the hat to the Police Department for keeping us sane during that time." He followed up with the question that, with the recent departure of the Police Chief, is the department understaffed and, if so, what is the plan to …
