Wine from Napa Valley, Winemaker in Darien

With a couple of trips a year to California's Napa Valley and an on-the-scene consultant to monitor the process, Paola Sordoni runs her own wine business from home here in Darien—winning accolades and selling on the Internet.

A lot of wine lovers visiting California's Napa Valley have daydreamed about starting their own winery, imagining that using their own good taste they could come up with an award-winning vintage. Paola Sordoni, a stay-at-home Darien mother with one toddler and now another on the way, hasn't just daydreamed about it: She's done it. She and her wine-loving husband, who together moved to Darien from New York City in October 2010, enjoyed playing with blending wine at home to get different tastes. "That was the fascinating part for me," she said. "How can we take a group—even one that wasn't so great to begin with—and make something beautiful with it?" POLL: Dry to Damp to Wet: Wine is in the Forecast

In this feature, we're asking you to vote for your favorite wine merchant.

It was a long time in the making, but our formerly dry town now boasts not one, but three liquor stores. So we're asking you, Wilton residents, to pick between Anconas Wines, Wilton Wine Shoppe, Vintage Fine Wines, or someplace else entirely for your favorite merchant.  Our guess is that preferences have developed and allegiances formed. Or maybe some of you still do a weekly liquor run to a neighboring town... Either way, after all those years lacking options, we'd like to hear from you. Show your favorite store some love. Create a free Patch login name and password if you don't already have one. Then, cast a vote through the poll below and help Patch determine the trifecta of first, second and third place among our newbies.  Then visit …

Wilton Wine Shoppe is most convenient to me and has a great selection and helpful staff. VFW is good too but their location isn't very good.   more ›

Society Sipping and Sampling

The Wilton Historical Society wines and dines attendees of its "Red, White and Bleu" tasting.

The Barn at The Wilton Historical Society was the setting for Thursday evening's "Red, White and Bleu: Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Tasting" led by WSET Certified Wine Specialist and Educator JoAnn LoGiurato.  LoGiurato's business, Dancing on Grapes, specializes in private wine tastings, presentations and events for women. "My whole focus has always been to teach women about wine," said LoGiurato, who runs the Wilton Women's Wine Club.   This event was not just for the ladies, though. Friends, supporters and volunteers of the Wilton Historical Society, and their husbands and wives, gathered for the lively event that lasted over 2 hours and served salad, bread, a variety of cheeses from Darien Cheese & Fine Foods, chocolates from Sweet Pierre…

In It For The Spirit(s)

MItch Ancona is moving closer to becoming the first to open a package store in Wilton; his thoughts on the matter may surprise you.

Some might argue that Mitch Ancona deserves to open the first package store in Wilton; at the very least, he's certainly paid his dues in more ways than one. Ancona first heard about the push for allowing liquor sales in Wilton around the time of the last presidential election in 2008. At that point, a petition was circulating in town to get the issue on the ballot and in front of voters. "When the whole concept of the petition being out there came about, that's when I had to start thinking about how this was going to affect me, my livelihood, and my business here," Ancona said during an interview last week at his busy Ridgefield store, the phone ringing off the hook nearby. "So then I started looking at the concept of opening up a second …
